Takács Quartet

Founded in 1975 in Budapest, today the Takács Quartet is regarded as one of the world’s most respected chamber music ensembles. Decorated in numerous countries, the quartet has performed across the globe and continues to be a frequent visitor on world’s most prominent stages. Through decades the quartet has refined their sound culture towards increasing finesse, and today they represent the highest degree of shared musical understanding and ensemble instincts.

In their House of Nobility concert the quartet presents a musical journey traversing from southern to central Europe. American composer Gabriela Lena Frank reflects in her work Quijotadas the groundbreaking novel Don Quijote by Miguel de Cervantes. The work’s five movements roll on beloved Spanish dances in a manner similar to the cavalcade of precious rascal characters of Cervante’s novel.

Mozart gave a distinct sound to the golden era of Viennese music, although his own musical roots lay in Italian polyphony. In string quartet he found the perfect vehicle to amalgamate his superb voice-leading facility with a gift for catchy tunes, a quality that granted him success in the world of opera. The String Quartet in F Major K. 590 remained his final work in the genre. Another last one, in fact his final composition, was the String Quartet in F Minor Op. 80 by Felix Mendelssohn. This vehement work came about as an homage to the composer’s recently deceased sister Fanny. The Schumannesque contour of the opening melody of the Adagio is a testimonial of the Leipzig masters’ deftness in embedding sound with a sense of longing in a way that unites listeners by way of shared comprehension.
