Rilian Trio was awarded the first prize in The 2026 Ilmari Hannikainen International Piano Chamber Music Competition in Jyväskylä. The Canadian Trio took the jury’s breath away with their glowing ensemble work, where a unique sense of lyricism, engaging musicianship, and absolute instrumental command formed a perfect balance.

In their Helsinki debut the trio performs masterworks from late classicism and early romanticism. The high-spirited Piano Trio No. 2 by Robert Schumann is followed by one of the most beloved works of the chamber music genre, Franz Schubert’s Piano Trio No. 2. The work’s second movement, arguably the composer’s most popular instrumental work, has found its way to numerous films, including Stanley Kubrick’s Barry Lyndon and Michael Haneke’s The Piano Teacher. The Andante, based on a Swedish folk song, is a sounding proof of the timeless dramatic power of the late classicism where passion and tranquillity are two sides of the same entirety and where poignancy of a melody needs no words. In addition, this All Saints Day weekend concert features Godwin Friesen’s composition to Psalm 131, A Song of Ascent, a text proclaiming virtues of humility.
