Winner of the 2023 Paulo Cello Competition, the young Canadian Luka Coetzee performs a dazzling program in her House of Nobility recital debut. Having already conquered the hearts of the Helsinki audience, Luka Coetzee delivers a program which includes the fervently passionate Sonata by Sergei Rachmaninoff and the brilliantly virtuosic Suite for Solo Cello by Gaspar Cassadó. For the Sonata, Luka Coetzee will be joined by pianist Juhani Lagerspetz, a highly revered maestro of especially the Russian repertoire.
Rachmaninoff composed the Sonata during a difficult period. Regarded as the most talented pianist of his generation, he was was enganged in an inner struggle to find a artistic direction that best served his nearly limitless creativity. The Sonata is filled with a sense of deeply melanchoy, a hallmark of Rachmaninoff’s beloved mature style. The work shares a temperament with some of the composer’s grandest works, such as the Second Symphony and the Third Piano Concerto. Especially close is the Second Piano Concerto, a work from the same period.
Program:
Gaspar Cassadó: Suite for Solo Cello
Sergei Rachmaninoff: Sonaata for Cello and Piano, Op. 19
Tickets: €15–35 + booking fee (from €1,50 www.lippu.fi)
