Performing their Helsinki debut at the House of Nobility, the Leonkoro Quartet is one of the hottest chamber ensembles currently on the circuit. The audacious ensemble of young Berliners tours the world extensively. Their program takes us straight to the heart of string quartet repertoire.

Felix Mendelssohn was one of the great child prodigies in music history. Composed at just 18, the passionate yet profound second String Quartet appears to continue the development of chamber drama from where Beethoven, deceases just a year earlier, had arrived with his late quartets. Henriëtte Bosmans lived an artist’s life of outward success but at the same personal tragedy. Her only String Quartet (1927) invites the listener on a traversal through private and at times painful emotions.

Franz Schubert made the nearness of death sound in music in a uniquely touching way. In his songs, the layers of texts were mirrored with subtle piano writing. In his instrumental music, the lack of words seems to strengthen the hidden meanings of music, which, as kind of shared secrets, are revealed to the listener. The String Quartet “Death and the Maiden” is one of Schubert’s key works. A moving, even shocking masterpiece, the work is a testament to the timeless power of instrumental music.

Program:

Henriëtte Bosmans: String Quartet
Felix Mendelssohn: String Quartet No. 2, op. 13
